2.2 Distribute the shape cards one per student (aim for different numbers of each kind of card).

Tell pupils that you are going to give them some instructions. These will be very simple but pupils will have to think quickly. They should listen carefully to each instruction and remember how they used words such as ‘AND’ and ‘OR’ when they were searching data or using the Internet in   previous years. They should stand up if the instruction applies to them, or sit down if it does not.

Instructions

Explain that the cards are circles or squares and white or black.

1. Ask the students to stand if they have a square.  Note that a large number stand.

2-3. Ask the students what other searches would make a large number stand.

4. Ask the students who have a shape that is square AND black to stand.  Note that a smaller number stand.

5. Ask the students for another search using AND.

6. Ask students who have a shape that is a square OR circle to stand.

7. Ask students for another search using OR.
