The Group Candle
On our first day in Lourdes we bought a big candle…. Really very big as candles go, which during night prayer we decorated with items symbolising our daily experiences in Lourdes. These ranged from shoelaces to photographs, a lone throat sweet, entrance tickets and Mass booklets, the remains of a balloon animal (of some description) from the pyjama party and many more personal and group reminders of the time spent together even stretching back to before the pilgrimage began. As we left the candle burning near the Grotto on our last evening we left also thanksgiving for our week together, our joy and pain, laughter and tears, friendship and love as well as prayers for our loved ones at home and all who have made the trip possible. The candle will have remained burning for many days after our return, which was a comforting thought as we journeyed home.
