This unit is adapted
from the KS3 Sample Unit 9.2 . This
version sets out to achieve the following:
Support I have created a post
for this unit on communicty.wikispaces.com
. If you have any questions or
feedback, post a comment on the discussion page and I’ll get back to you via
email. Online Survey Tools This project uses SurveyAtSchool
which has a minimal cost and provides a simple but sophisticated set of
tools. There are free survey sites,
including surveymonkey. However they
tend to restrict the number of questions. Rather than asking the
students to create a large number of surveys in groups, I combine their
questions into one survey. This also
ensures that they get better quality data for analysis. Working with a link school Most schools now have a
link school in another country. This
project is an ideal way to involve the link into the curriculum. If you do not have a link school, you can
ask your students to complete and analyse the survey my school produces with
schools in the If you wish to find a
link school a good place to start is the Etwinning
Website. However, it may take a while
to find a school to work with. |

INTRO LESSON, National Stats |
|
The purpose of this
activity is to give an introduction to how survey statistics are used in the
real world. It helps students to
understand that an hypothesis is a kind of prediction. It also helps them to identify key data
from a large data set. The scatter graphs that
they make are not a skill that is required in the rest of the unit, but is
still very worth knowing. |

Welcome I put a welcome slide up
on my board before the students come in.
This means that they have something to do as soon as they come
in. Once the lesson is ready to start
I show the class the lesson aims (slide 2).
I often include a plenary slide (3) to finish the lesson with. Tasks Students should then
complete the tasks as shown by the Project Brief. There are links to each stage of the brief
from the students’ homepage. Email It is a good idea to
gather some of the students ideas to share them in the next lesson. This can be done via email, or any other
method you wish. Mark Alert Each lesson ends with a
mark alert to ensure that students have properly completed all key
tasks. It also helps to retain the key
points of the lesson. |

This lesson is help
students learn how to plan all the stages of a large project. This will help prepare them for the AiDA
course in Y10. Gantt Diagram After having a go at
creating a gantt, you’ll see that I’ve created a finished version. Get the students to prnt scrn the page and
paste it into paint. They can then
crop just the diagram and save it as a .jpg.
They can then insert it into the homepage of their website. |

Feedback Make sure that you have slide
7 of the presentation showing on your board when the students evaluating each
other’s work. |

Survey Either ask your students
to complete our survey, or one you have created yourself. You could ask groups of
students to create their own online surveys.
However, if their questions are not good enough, they will not have
good data to analyse later in the unit.
I prefer to get everyone to use the same survey data. This means that I have to explain to them
how their questions actually got onto the internet and what the site will do
with the data. Basically it saves it
all as a .csv file which you can then download for processing. Notes When you teach the
students the skills to filter data, create pivot tables and use formulae get
the students to write very short notes on paper. I show each step and then tell the
precisely what to write. This helps
them to concentrate and serves as a reminder in later lessons when they are
required to work independently. Hints wiki I’ve created a series of
instructions to do the various skills.
These can be used as your script when telling the students what to
write. The students can also use them
in later lessons if they wish. They
are linked in the lesson plan. |

Notes Assessment Criteria On the fourth slide of
the welcome presentation I’ve added the assessment criteria for this
unit. It is also on the welcome
presentations for 6-8. It is important
to stress to the students that once they are given the real survey data, they
need to work independently to achieve L6. |
